Glossary
The AI, RevOps & Sales Glossary
Plain-English definitions for the terms shaping modern go-to-market — from agentic AI and lead scoring to behavioral-timing intelligence and the OpenClaw protocol.
A
- Account-Based Marketing (ABM)
- A B2B strategy that treats target accounts as markets of one — coordinating personalized marketing and sales plays across a defined set of high-value companies rather than chasing individual leads.
- Agentic AI
- AI systems that autonomously plan, execute multi-step tasks, and adapt based on outcomes — without human prompts at every step. In RevOps, agentic AI replaces entire workflows like prospect research, enrichment, and outreach sequencing.
- AI Agent
- A software entity that perceives an environment (CRM data, signals, web), decides what to do, and acts using tools or APIs. Modern revenue stacks deploy fleets of agents for prospecting, scoring, and follow-up.
- AI SDR
- An autonomous agent that performs the job of a Sales Development Rep — sourcing leads, researching accounts, personalizing outreach, and booking meetings — without a human in the loop for routine cycles.
- Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR)
- The normalized one-year value of a subscription business's contracted revenue. The default valuation and planning metric for SaaS.
- Attribution
- The discipline of assigning credit to the marketing and sales touchpoints that influenced a closed deal. Multi-touch attribution is increasingly replaced by causal-inference and uplift models.
B
- BDR (Business Development Representative)
- An outbound-focused sales rep responsible for sourcing new pipeline through cold outreach. Increasingly being replaced or augmented by autonomous AI agents that handle research, personalization, and sequencing at scale.
- Behavioral-Timing Intelligence
- The practice of detecting the precise moment a target account shows real buying intent (job changes, tech installs, funding events, web behavior) and routing the right rep to the right person within minutes — not days.
- Buying Committee
- The group of stakeholders inside a target account who collectively approve a B2B purchase — typically 6–10 people across champion, economic buyer, technical evaluator, and end-user roles.

C
- Churn
- The rate at which customers cancel or fail to renew. Net churn factors in expansion revenue from existing accounts and is the single most-watched metric after ARR.
- Cold Outreach
- Unsolicited contact with prospects who haven't engaged with your brand. The classic outbound motion — increasingly orchestrated by agents that personalize at scale rather than reps blasting templates.
- Context Window
- The maximum number of tokens an LLM can consider at once — input plus output. Bigger windows enable richer RAG, longer agent traces, and full-document analysis.
- CRM (Customer Relationship Management)
- The system of record for accounts, contacts, opportunities, and activities. Salesforce and HubSpot dominate, but the CRM is increasingly an integration backbone rather than a system humans use directly.
- CRO (Chief Revenue Officer)
- The executive accountable for all revenue functions — typically sales, marketing, customer success, and revenue operations. The primary buyer for modern AI-native GTM platforms.
- Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)
- The fully loaded cost of acquiring a paying customer — sales, marketing, tooling, and overhead divided by net new customers in a period. CAC payback under 12 months is the modern bar.
- Customer Success
- The post-sale function responsible for adoption, renewal, and expansion. In modern orgs CS owns net revenue retention and increasingly uses agentic AI for health scoring and proactive outreach.

D
- Dark Funnel
- Buyer activity that happens off your owned channels and outside your tracking — Slack groups, podcasts, LinkedIn DMs, peer conversations. Often where the real buying decision is made.
- Data Enrichment
- The process of appending firmographic, technographic, and contact data (company size, tech stack, role, email) to records you already have. Foundational to any modern outbound motion.
- Demand Generation
- The marketing discipline of creating awareness and interest in your category and product, generating both inbound leads and downstream pipeline — distinct from lead generation, which captures contact info.
E
- Ecliptica
- Production-grade behavioral-timing intelligence platform built on the OpenClaw protocol. Used by RevOps teams to identify ICP accounts the moment they show buying intent and auto-route warm leads to the right rep.
- Embedding
- A high-dimensional numerical representation of text, image, or other data that captures semantic meaning. The unit of currency for vector search, RAG, and agent memory.
- Evaluation (Eval)
- The systematic measurement of an AI system's quality against a curated test set — accuracy, hallucination rate, helpfulness, latency. The discipline that separates demos from production AI.
F
- Fine-Tuning
- The process of further training a foundation model on a narrow task or domain to specialize its behavior. Increasingly replaced by RAG and prompt engineering for most enterprise use cases.
- Foundation Model
- A large, general-purpose model trained on broad data that can be adapted to many downstream tasks — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Llama. The base layer of the modern AI stack.
- Function Calling
- An LLM capability where the model outputs structured calls to external tools or APIs (search the web, run SQL, send an email) — the mechanic that turns a chatbot into an agent.
G
- Generative AI
- AI systems that produce new content — text, images, audio, code, video — rather than only classifying or predicting. The umbrella term that put LLMs on every CEO's roadmap in 2023.
- GTM (Go-to-Market)
- The full system a company uses to reach customers and generate revenue — including ICP definition, channels, messaging, sales motion, and customer success.
- Guardrails
- Runtime constraints that keep an LLM or agent on-policy — input filters, output validators, refusal patterns, allowlists. The difference between a useful agent and a liability.
H
- Hallucination
- When an LLM generates plausible-sounding but factually wrong content. The #1 reason production AI systems use RAG, function calling, and human review.
I
- ICP (Ideal Customer Profile)
- A precise definition of the company most likely to buy, succeed with, and renew your product. Modern ICP work uses firmographic, behavioral, and intent signals — not just industry and headcount.
- Inbound
- A motion where prospects come to you — through content, search, community, or referral — rather than being cold-contacted. Higher win-rate, harder to scale predictably.
- Intent Data
- Signals that indicate an account is actively researching a category or solution — content consumption, search behavior, review-site activity, or job postings. The fuel for modern behavioral-timing systems.
L
- LangChain
- Open-source framework for building applications powered by language models. Often used to chain together LLM calls, tools, memory, and data sources into agentic workflows.
- Lead Generation
- The activity of capturing contact information from potential buyers — typically through forms, content downloads, events, or outbound prospecting. The top of the modern revenue funnel.
- Lead Scoring
- Assigning a numeric score to a lead based on fit (matches your ICP) and engagement (took meaningful actions). AI-driven scoring weighs hundreds of signals dynamically rather than using static rules.
- LlamaIndex
- Open-source data framework for connecting LLMs to private and external data sources. Often paired with LangChain for retrieval-augmented agentic systems.
- LLM (Large Language Model)
- A neural network trained on massive text corpora that predicts the next token — the engine behind ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and the modern agentic stack.
- LTV (Lifetime Value)
- The total revenue a single customer generates over the full relationship. LTV-to-CAC ratio above 3x is the SaaS health benchmark.
M
- MarTech (Marketing Technology)
- The full stack of software marketing teams use — CRM, automation, analytics, content, and AI tooling. The category is consolidating fast as agentic AI absorbs point-solution functionality.
- MCP (Model Context Protocol)
- An open protocol introduced by Anthropic that standardizes how LLMs connect to tools, data sources, and external systems — the USB-C of agentic AI integrations.
- MQL (Marketing Qualified Lead)
- A lead deemed engaged enough by marketing — usually via score thresholds — to hand off to sales. A category increasingly considered legacy as orgs move to account-level qualification.
- MRR (Monthly Recurring Revenue)
- The normalized one-month value of a subscription business's contracted revenue. The faster-cadence sibling of ARR; preferred by early-stage SaaS for momentum tracking.
- Multi-Threading
- The practice of selling into multiple stakeholders inside a target account simultaneously — crucial for navigating modern 6–10 person buying committees.
Related:Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR)
N
- Net Revenue Retention (NRR)
- The percentage of recurring revenue retained from existing customers over a period, including upsell, cross-sell, downgrade, and churn. NRR above 120% is the public-SaaS gold standard.
O
- OpenClaw
- The emerging open-source standard for agentic lead-gen orchestration — think 'LangChain for revenue agents.' Lets RevOps teams compose AI agents that scrape, enrich, score, and trigger outreach autonomously.
- Orchestration
- The layer that coordinates multiple agents, tools, and data sources into a coherent workflow. The plumbing under every production agentic system.
- Outbound
- A motion where reps (or agents) initiate contact with prospects who haven't expressed interest. The hard, predictable counterpart to inbound — and the area most disrupted by agentic AI.
P
- Pipeline Generation
- The activities and systems that produce qualified sales opportunities — outbound, inbound, partnerships, events. The #1 board-level metric for most B2B companies in 2026.
- Pipeline Velocity
- A composite metric: (number of opps × avg deal size × win rate) ÷ avg sales cycle length. The single best summary of revenue-engine health.
- Predictive Scoring
- Lead or account scoring driven by ML models trained on historical conversion patterns — superior to rule-based scoring at finding non-obvious buyer signals.
- Product-Led Growth (PLG)
- A go-to-market motion where the product itself drives acquisition, conversion, and expansion — rather than a traditional sales-led funnel. Often paired with a sales team for enterprise expansion.
- Prompt Engineering
- The craft of designing inputs that reliably elicit the desired behavior from an LLM. Increasingly automated by meta-prompts and prompt-optimization frameworks.
Related:GTM (Go-to-Market)
Q
- Quota Attainment
- The percentage of reps hitting their assigned sales target in a period. Industry-wide attainment dropped below 50% during 2023–24, accelerating the shift to AI-augmented selling.
R
- RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)
- An architecture that retrieves relevant context from a knowledge base and feeds it into the LLM at inference time — the dominant pattern for grounding generative AI in private or up-to-date data.
- Revenue Intelligence
- Software that captures every customer-facing interaction (calls, emails, meetings) and turns it into structured insight — deal risk, forecast accuracy, coaching opportunities. Gong-style platforms.
- RevOps (Revenue Operations)
- The function that aligns sales, marketing, and customer-success operations under one team — owning the systems, data, processes, and analytics that drive predictable revenue.
S
- Sales Cadence
- A pre-defined sequence of touches (email, call, LinkedIn, video) over a set timeframe. In 2026, static cadences are giving way to signal-triggered, agent-orchestrated outreach.
- Sales Engagement Platform (SEP)
- Software that orchestrates and tracks multi-channel sales outreach — Outreach.io, Salesloft, Apollo. Increasingly absorbing AI-SDR and signal-routing functionality.
- Sales Intelligence
- Software and data that helps reps understand their accounts and prospects deeply — buying signals, org charts, recent news, tech installs, contact info. Increasingly delivered through AI agents.
- Sales Velocity
- How quickly revenue moves through the pipeline. Identical formula to pipeline velocity but typically applied to in-quarter forecasting.
- SAM (Serviceable Addressable Market)
- The slice of TAM your business model and channels can actually reach. Sits between the aspirational TAM and the realistic SOM in any honest GTM plan.
- Signal-Based Selling
- An outbound motion triggered by real-time buying signals (funding, hiring, tech changes, website visits) rather than scheduled cadences. The behavioral-timing layer enables this at scale.
- SOM (Serviceable Obtainable Market)
- The realistic share of SAM you can capture given your team, capital, and competitive position — typically the number boards actually plan against.
- SQL (Sales Qualified Lead)
- A lead that sales has accepted as worth working — distinct from an MQL. Modern orgs increasingly skip MQL→SQL and qualify at the account level.
Related:Pipeline Velocity
T
- TAM (Total Addressable Market)
- The total revenue opportunity available if your product reached 100% of its possible market. Realistic GTM planning uses SAM and SOM instead.
- Technographics
- Data about the technologies an account uses — CRM, billing, cloud, analytics. Combined with firmographics and intent, the third leg of modern targeting.
- Tokens
- The units LLMs read and generate — roughly 0.75 words per token for English. Pricing, context windows, and rate limits are all denominated in tokens.
V
- Vector Database
- A database optimized for storing and querying embeddings — the numerical representations of text, images, or other data used by LLMs. Powers semantic search, RAG, and agent memory.
W
- Win Rate
- The percentage of qualified opportunities that close as won. The fastest input to improve when reducing CAC and lifting pipeline velocity.
